Mojo Len's Interview with
The DeVille
By now, every half-decent Pink Floyd fan knows
about the uncanny synchronicities when their mega-hit album
Dark Side Of The Moon is played alongside the classic
MGM film The Wizard of Oz in place of its original audio
track. The trouble has always been syncing the two great pieces
of work precisely right--especially after a few hits on the
bong. Now, thanks to the fine folks at SyncMovies.com, the process
of enjoying the blended two, as one, is as simple as buttering
hot toast.
The Visionary of SyncMovies, The DeVille, got
both parties on the same page and slipped the album and film
onto one simple DVD and viola... perfect harmony sync-film success.
All you have to do now is slip the DVD into your player, press
play, sit back and enjoy the ride. Oh yeah--and keep an eye
out for the SyncMovie magic. The ooohs and ahhhs will spill
out of your mouth like you're at a fireworks display
We hooked up with The DeVille to get to get the
details on his reworked masterpieces that are just like Reece's
Peanut Butter Cups; two perfect products blended together to
make one delicious treat.
HI MAN. FIRST OFF WE LOVE YOUR WORK.
Well, thank you.
HAVE YOU RECEIVED ANY POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM
THE ARTISTS AFTER YOU TRANSFORMED THEIR WORK, TO BE ENJOYED
ON A WHOLE NEW LEVEL?
Well, I did personally speak to George Romero
and he said, "Get these legaled up." That was
his word for it.
I COULD SEE THE MOVIE STUDIOS AND THE RECORD
COMPANIES PULLING THEIR HAIR OUT. HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT GETTING
EVERYTHING ALL HOOKED UP?
Well, as my dad says, "It's easier to get
forgiveness than it is permission." I tried to get permission
up front back in 2001 to do the very first DVD The Dark Side
Of Oz and they didn't even want to talk about it. 'Just
plain cease to exist--period.' is all they have to say. Well
I'm sorry, man, I got something I'm supposed to do and I'm doing
it.
YOU SENT SKUNK 18 DIFFERENT SYNCMOVIES. I STARTED
WATCHING THE FIRST ONE, THE DARK SIDE OF OZ. HOW LONG
HAS THIS PHENOMENON BEEN AROUND?
The fisrt ripple happened in 1997, but I didn't
hear about it. I had first heard about it in 1999, when my son
came home and said he had seen something about it online. He
had all the info written down about when to start playing it
and what things you're suppose to see. We set it up and played
it and it was like, WOW. It was like the first time you were
riding the roller coaster when you were ten years old... holy
cow.
YOU HAD THE BALLS TO SAY, 'YOU KNOW WHAT? IT
DOESN'T STOP HERE.' WHAT'S YOUR PROCESS OF LINING UP THE FILMS
WITH CDs? I HAVE ABOUT 1000 ALBUMS LAYING AROUND THE HOUSE--CAN
YOU HONESTLY TELL ME EACH CD HAS THEIR OWN MOVIE SOMEWHERE OUT
THERE?
Either does, or will. Like Led Zeppelin IV
came out in 1978.
YOU LINED IT UP WITH LORD OF THE RINGS: THE
FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING.
Yeah, this is fairly recent. You have to admit;
it is the perfect movie and perfect CD to go together.
THE EXORCIST FREAKS ME OUT BY ITSELF,
BUT HERE YOU PAIRED IT UP WITH BLACK SABBATH'S BLACK SABBATH
TO CREATE THE OZZORCIST. IF THIS DOESN'T SCARE THE SHIT
OUT OF YOU, NOTHING WILL.
Watch the movie by itself a few times to familiarize
yourself with what's going on and listen to the CD to refresh
your memory a little bit.
PAIRING UP BOWIE'S ZIGGY STARDUST WITH
THE LAST STARFIGHTER. I REMEMBERED SEEING THE FILM WAY
BACK WHEN. I WAS GOING TO WATCH IT AGAIN TO GET FAMILIAR WITH
IT AND THEN THE SYNC, BUT I NOTICED THAT YOU DON'T HAVE THE
OPTION TO JUST PLAY THE FILM, OR TO JUST LISTEN TO THE MUSIC.
That's right and that was a concience choice.
It's a real simple matter to create another soundtrack, but
then that would be giving away the lifeblood of the studios.
There would be no reason for people to buy the originals. I'm
not trying to replace them; I love them to death.
HAVE YOU EVER LINED UP TWO DIFFERENT PROJECTS
BELIEVING THE END RESULT WOUD BE THE CAT'S WHISKERS, BUT IT
DIDN'T REALLY MESH OUT IN THE END?
Oh yeah, all the time. It either works or it doesn't
work and it's quite obvious within the first couple of minutes.
If something doesn't knock you down in a few minutes, you don't
have a sync.
I'VE TRIED WATCHING THE FILMS STRAIGHT AND I'VE
SAT THROUGH THEM HIGH. BOTH WAYS ARE VERY ENJOYABLE. JUST THE
SAME, THE DOORS ARE ALWAYS OPEN A TOUCH MORE AFTER A HIT OR
TWO. ARE YOU A SMOKER?
A smoker, a toker and a midnight joker. Toking
kind of slows down time, showing you a lot of things you might
not have seen otherwise.
OUR READERS WILL REALLY ENJOY YOUR WORK, IF THEY
HAVEN'T DONE SO ALREADY. WHAT'S THE STORY WITH YOUR NAME: "THE
DEVILLE"? WHO USES "THE" AS A FIRST NAME?
My grandmother had this saying, "Idle hands
are the devil's workshop." I remembered it well as I was
looking for a name for my company, Idol Hands Entertainment,
only IDOL--as in rock stars. And "idol hands" are
The DeVille's workshop. I'm not qite the Devil, but arguably,
you could say they are divinely or otherwise inspired. It's
not an accident.
SO WHO DO YOU THINK IS BEHIND IT?
Lucifer was the angel of music. What do you think?
MAN, I JUST TOLD YOU THE EXORCIST FREAKS ME OUT.
This is where I lose everybody. I did warn you.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
Abbott and Costello's Hold That Ghost.
WHAT ABOUT FAVORITE RECORD?
Code Atom, At The Edge Of Reason.
HEY NO FAIR--THAT'S YOUR SON'S BAND (myspace.com/codeatom)!
SCREW THE NEPOTISM.
Okay, not in the family. It's a toss up between
Led Zep's IV and Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink
Floyd.
